European Far-Right Dictating the Public Agenda, Study Finds

Mainstream political parties are more and more enabling the radical right to dictate the political agenda, as per a recent study conducted in Germany.

Academics found that this phenomenon has inadvertently benefited far-right parties by legitimising their viewpoints and disseminating them more widely.

Study Based on Two Decades of Media Coverage

The findings, published in the academic journal on political studies, relied on an computerized content review of over 520,000 news pieces from six German publications.

Berlin-based scholars observed that as the far right shifted from fringe issues in the late 1990s to core themes like integration and migration, mainstream parties progressively adjusted their communication in reaction.

This adjustment boosted the spread of these ideas and signaled to voters that such stances were acceptable.

Implications for Democratic Systems

"Public communication by established political groups is crucial in the electoral success of the radical right," stated a expert in political behavior involved in the study.

"This element has been overlooked," she added.

The effect was noticeable even when conventional groups were condemning the radical faction. "They still receive focus," the expert commented. "Our core argument is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this attention is crucial."

Mainstreaming Effect Across the Continent

While the research was centered around the German context, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to affect nations throughout the European continent.

"This is frequently observed in European media," said another co-author. "Radical groups says something and everyone starts talking about it for several days."

"Although you're opposing it, you're repeating it," he added.

Hardening of Political Rhetoric

At certain points, leaders have also toughened their language to match that of the far right.

In a recently published discussion, a then German chancellor advocated large-scale deportations and urged them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."

Comparable examples can be found throughout the continent, as politicians from countries ranging from the United Kingdom to France embrace the language of the radical right, particularly on migration.

This has formed an echo chamber that was inconceivable a ten years prior.

Core Issue: Who Dictates the Narrative?

"{If you're a centrist political group and you are discussing cultural issues – immigration, assimilation – in a way that is determined by the pace of the radical right, that's the whole idea of narrative control," explained a researcher.

Other parties have gone one step further, attempting to emulate the strict platform of the far right, even as research indicates that doing so drives the electorate to vote for the radical faction.

Progressive Influence and Voter Awareness

The extent of data collected revealed that the influence of radical parties had been progressive and had grown with the passage of time.

"Public perception doesn't change from day to day," commented a researcher. "However, when you encounter this negative framing around immigration frequently, and it is being disseminated not only by far-right parties but also, for example, by mainstream political organizations, then of course this storyline gains more traction."

Requirement for Mainstream Parties to Develop Their Own Narratives

The study emphasized the need for established parties to develop their own narratives, particularly on subjects such as immigration and integration, rather than continuously trailing after the far right.

"It's like a dance," said one author. "If the conductor is far-right and you're responding to them, you cannot decide which music should be heard."
