Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Squad Against India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock selection.

Recent Form Result in Omission

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates

Recent performances suggest of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their opening batting issues.

Bowling Returns and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
