Top-Flight News: Hannibal Suspended for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
From the world of Premier League developments, a key player was given a significant ban, a manager has pointed to a defender's errors to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for backline improvements after a chaotic victory.
1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Suspension and Fine
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game suspension and a financial penalty for misconduct during a recent match against Leeds United. The governing body confirmed Mejbri was referred an independent disciplinary panel after an incident of spitting towards visiting fans at the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
An FA statement read: “A disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the Premier League match with Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he acted against the rules of football and/or in a poor manner by using offensive and/or unacceptable behaviour through spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”
It added, “Mejbri subsequently admitted the allegation, with the panel imposed a four-match ban and £15,000 following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for its decisions are to be released in due course.” The team, currently 19th in the standings, travel to 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.
2. Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Mistakes to Make a Point
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has stated that not having seasoned players is not a problem for his club, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having a bad game in the loss to Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the most youthful team in the Premier League, rejected the idea that inexperience was a factor in their poor result. He presented his argument by singling out Tosin, the oldest player on the pitch, who produced an error-strewn display at the back.
“We always mention a lack of experience when we fail to win,” the coach said. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, no one was talking about older personnel. I know that if we don’t win, people are always searching for an explanation, but I think why we lost against Leeds was not down to inexperience, it’s because we were not at our best.”
He added, “Who was the most senior player for us on the pitch? Who was? Was he good? So, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'
Pep Guardiola has stated his team have taken lessons from a midweek scare against Fulham and the episode is now forgotten. The team survived for a 5-4 win during a incredible encounter on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with almost an hour gone.
Coming after they fought off a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior fixture, prompting further doubts regarding if they possess the defensive steel enough to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Good lessons, hopefully. At this level, for every team, one must learn from both good and bad in the good things and bad things and focus on the next one.”
“Naturally I am worried,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse the cause, to not allow the goals. After conceding three scored against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham it shows the two versions, correct? So, we have we have done many positive things. Yet the number of attempts did Leeds ? Three? They scored two. It’s not good. How many attempts did Fulham have? Five, six? So the average of shots conceded is too high. We have to improve.”
Newcastle Prioritise New Defenders' Deals
Newcastle United's new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list at St James’ Park. Wilson arrived from Nottingham Forest recently and was reassured that playmaker Sandro Tonali has a contract that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
That has left Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. Livramento's agreement set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, the club's talks have assumed a certain urgency.
“The initial three or four days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation is much better than the one I had thought,” he stated. “However, it is well known that we would want to extend Tino’s deal and also would want to extend Sven Botman’s too. These talks are ongoing.”
Head coach Eddie Howe is without Botman for the match against Burnley this Saturday, with the defender likely to be out for a further period.
Nuno Says Paquetá Returns Against Brighton
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for the side face Brighton this Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it won't be repeated as he personally acknowledged the error. We discussed it about it in the dressing room. I believe it is over and will not happen again.”
He also acknowledged the significant pressure facing his team, currently 18th before the weekend fixtures. “We cannot avoid it,” he admitted. “It's a reality. We must face it. We are fighting for survival. We cannot hide it.”
Arteta Impressed by Striker Deputy Merino
Mikel Merino could continue as Arsenal’s central striker despite their regular frontmen return from injury. The midfielder has been deployed as an emergency No 9 because of fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
