Unidentified Magenta Slime on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Prompts Fears of Likely Algae Outbreak
Authorities in the island state are striving to determine a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with certain experts worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Presence Along Shore
The rosy-colored ooze was found on a section of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the city. A comparable ooze has also been documented on sections of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Taken for Testing
Examples have been taken and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A representative stated that "algal blooms are a natural event in reaction to changes in nutrients, warmth, precipitation or light".
"The events are sometimes called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can color the water reddish," the representative added. "Few algae outbreaks are harmful, with several kinds acting as a major source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The primary reason of reddish water in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Increasing Rate Associated with Climate Change
Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their occurrence has risen in recent years, in part due to climate change and contamination that join together to create food-loaded oceans primed for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that usually act as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that disturbs the healthy balance of marine environments.
These occurrences have been likened to underwater bushfires and can keep expanding as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, delicate ocean habitats can be wiped out as sea creatures is killed or suffocated, offering more nutrients for the outbreak.
Past Severe Bloom in a neighboring state
Another region in the past confronted a severe algae outbreak along its coastal region after a string of oceanic warm spells, which extended across a vast area. The outbreak left beachgoers with eye irritation and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to government calculations.
Scientist Opinion on the Local Situation
A marine expert, who was involved in studying the start of that event said, based on pictures of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"We have seen many of these events around Tasmania of late," she said.
The scientist said this organism did not create poisons like the organism involved in the previous severe outbreak, but it does consume microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"You usually see a outbreak of this algae after a proliferation of a different species, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Appeals for Action and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, commented it seemed the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, citing similar cases overseas.
"Thus the state needs to issue a clear message here, the authorities and the EPA need to act to this. We need to analyse the samples we've taken and we need to inform the community here," she said.
The scientist stated she had concerns for public safety after feeling a prickling feeling along her limbs and skin while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.
Accounts of Dead Sea Creatures and Appeals for Official Response
An environmental foundation has stated deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a prominent conservationist describing the circumstances as an "ecological crisis" and urging the local leader to inspect and "lead the response that officials must be doing".
"Officials needs to realize this is a catastrophe in the happening, economically as well as for nature."

Speaking to journalists, the leader stated he was did not know of any relationships between the algae outbreak and the farming business, saying scientific testing was required before determinations could be drawn.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are environmentally safe and long-lasting," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across the island are our resources and we need to make sure the public and our economy can coexist to utilize our seas efficiently and responsibly."
