White House Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week
Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.
Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.
At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.
An analysis argued that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.
A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
