Woman Knifed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Attack Dies
The female victim stabbed repeatedly to her neck area in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, charged over the attack.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting the city fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... and to think a totally random act [happened], you know, it's horrible."
